Patricia Aluko – Research Assistant within the Institute of Health & Society at Newcastle University – recently wrote a blog about the incorporation of brief economic commentaries (BECs) into Cochrane Incontinence Group reviews.
The eight different reviews all focused on different surgical approaches to treat stress urinary incontinence in women. These reviews were chosen because the use of synthetic mesh in some procedures has been the subject of much debate, both in the UK and internationally. Due to the concerns surrounding the synthetic mesh, attention turned to the use of other procedures, in terms of both their surgical and cost effectiveness.
The blog goes on to outline how the task of adding BECs to the 8 reviews took place.
